The RWCMD Bursary Scheme

We would like to offer a huge congratulations to those cadets who have been awarded bursaries to the RWCMD. As part of the drive to increase the profile of music in the ACF across Wales, our Honorary Colonel, Alan Peterson OBE, has funded bursaries for cadets to take part in the Junior Conservatoire at the centre in Cardiff, which offers the only training of its kind in Wales, immersing students in a specialist environment where they can benefit from an intensive musical education. This is an incredible opportunity for the cadets to receive one-to-one lessons from some of the most renowned musicians in the world, as well as a whole host of additional support.

The bursary, which would normally cost up to £3000 per student, is being fully funded, and includes travel. For some of those youngsters who are considering a career in music, or are planning to join the Corps of Army Music, this will give an incredible lift towards their future goals. To apply, cadets from across Wales were invited to submit audio recordings of them playing two contrasting pieces of music on an instrument (or two) of their choice. From the traditional military band instruments to the more contemporary bass guitar or vocals, all were welcome. To go alongside this, they were also required to submit a personal statement. These were assessed by Kevin Price, Head of Music Performance at the RWCMD and Patricia Keir, Head of Pre-College. Incredibly, all five entrants from G&P were selected to receive one of two levels of bursary, which is an amazing achievement. The bursary is a unique and innovative idea, being the the first of its kind for the development of Cadet Music in the ACF, and its success will provide a foundation for future schemes, potentially across the whole of Army Cadet Music. It is fully supported and endorsed by Colonel Peterson OBE, Colonel Williams, Colonel Cadets Wales, WO1 Porter, Band of the Prince of Wales, Kevin Price, RWCMD and 160 Brigade. Congratulations to our award winners - we are incredibly proud of you and look forward to seeing you reap the benefits of this incredible opportunity!
