A Rossett teenager has become the highest-ranked army cadet in North Wales.

Multi-talented Ethan Thompson has been appointed to the senior rank of cadet Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) by Wrexham MP Sarah Atherton who was making a special visit to the day's training at summer camp.

The promotion means the 17-year-old will now lead and give guidance to over 400 youngsters in the Clwyd and Gwynedd Army Cadet Force (ACF).

Sarah, who is also a member of The Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme and the Defence Select Committee, said “I was delighted to be able to make this presentation to this talented young man”

Ethan from Rossett Detachment said he was thrilled with his new rank. Ethan added: “I was very pleased to receive this promotion, it’s something that I’ve been working towards for some time and I never thought I’d progress this far“. Ethan who has been a cadet for five years during which time he has progressed to Master Cadet and completed five summer camps added “I’ve managed to do so much with the cadets since joining, I’ve made some great friends and been given a lot of opportunities. I am looking forward to supporting other cadets as RSM.”

Detachment Commander Chalky White said ”Ethan has always shown loyalty and commitment to both his Company and Detachment he is a well-presented cadet on all occasions showing a maturity we wish all cadets would grow into. This appointment is a just reward for his hard work and commitment”

Company Commander Andrea Burton said “Ethan has been an exemplary cadet and has worked tirelessly during his time in cadets. During the period of lockdown in particular he has shown himself to be worthy and an excellent cadet and young person. He is an example of what can happen when you work hard. He is thoroughly deserving of this promotion. Well done Ethan.”
