Life Saving skills put to the test

24 April 2023

  • Humberside And South Yorkshire ACF

On Saturday 22nd April all five Companies from Humberside & South Yorkshire descended upon the tranquil quiet of CTC Driffield - with teams from each Company competing against each other in this year's First Aid Competition.

The day started off with Individuals taking part in various First Aid Scenarios to gain points for their respective teams. After lunch they then proceeded onto Team Scenarios dealing with various Adult Casualties, with all the teams performing well.

Colonel Fred Owen, Commandant said: "The cadets worked through scenarios as individuals and as a team, treating trauma, medical emergencies and non-breathing casualties. The cadets demonstrated brilliant incident management, leadership and teamwork. Their casualty management and treatment is excellent”

The day ended with Colonel Owen presenting awards to the winners. The Best Team was awarded to C Company, Best senior Team; B Company, Best Individual; Cadet V Allen (C Company), and Overall winners; C Company. The C Company team consisting of Cdt Allen (Corps of Drums), Cdt Head (Corps of Drums), L/Cpl Jefferies (Corps of Drums), and L/Cpl Sherratt (Mexborough) will now go on to represent the county at Brigade Level.

These competitions only run with the hard work and dedication of Cadet Force Adult Volunteers and the Cadets who come along to help as casualties - so a massive thank you to all those who make events like these possible. Including the very talented team of SSI Sara Grundy and SI Hayley Fallis who produced the gruesome looking (thankfully fake) injuries for the competition. Col Owen said of the competition and First aid skills: "It was an absolute delight to be able to recognise our young cadets for their achievements. First Aid is a life skill that you take home, into your community and into the workplace.

"To learn and administer first aid to someone in a time of need, often with other present dangers is the best example of selfless commitment. Time and time again young people respond as rescuers where some adults standby.

"These cadets are real heroes, in the name of mankind I extend my heartfelt gratitude to them all for being wonderful young people with lifesaving skills."
