Captain Thompson is the Essex ACF first Aid officer and in her day job works teaching first aid and mental health consulting for St John Ambulance. At the start of the pandemic she was deployed to work at the London Excel delivering Covid-19 training at the London Nightingale for volunteers from St. John ambulance.
She said “I have to say the scale of the operation at the Nightingale was scary. It was massive and to see all the ventilators and the sheer volume of it stunned me“.
While she worked hard to train the volunteers to face the realities of hospital life, her husband was also busy helping our community.
CSMI Thompson Has been working for the NHS at Brookfield house, where he has been dealing with mentally ill patients struggling to comprehend the Covid-19 crisis. He also had to deal with deaths within his team.
The CSMSI’s Day job is as a domestic housekeeper on two wards, where among other things his duties include security checks, ordering & serving food, managing infection control and providing for health and safety needs of his patients. In short his job is never done. The C Company CSMI is very grateful of his ACF friends who have supported him during this tough time at work. He said wanted to thank CSMI Eustace (of A Company) for the support he has showed him over the last couple of weeks. It’s great that our volunteers are friends and all support each other not just in their cadet roles but in their civilian lives as well.
Both the Thompsons have been extremely busy with work but have been instrumental in providing the #VirtualACF experience over the past few months. Capt. Thompson has been key to helping our cadets with mental health advice in these troubled times. Whilst in C Company the CSMI has been helping judge online cadet challenges and maintaining support to the rest of the senior team in C Company.
Captain Thompson went on to say, “Whilst all of this has been going on, I have also been schooling my 8 year old as well. So, I have had to brush up on my maths skills!”
It is clear from talking to the Thompsons that the ACF has been a “Rock” in their life in these difficult times. Neither of them has taken their foot off the gas for work or lessened their commitment to friends, family the ACF or their community during this difficult time. They have lived the values and standards of the ACF very positively over the past few months.
