Elgin Cadets Praised For First Aid

Two Elgin Cadets were recently recognised for their First Aid Skills. Cadets Robert McMillian (14) and Zara Laws (14) were both presented with an Army Cadet Charitable Trust UK Praiseworthy First Aid Certificate last month, for putting their First Aid Training to use.

Both cadets received a certificate for performing First Aid on a member of the public in the summer. Zara and Robert were out with their family for a walk up Lady Hill in Elgin and came across an unresponsive member of the public, which saw both cadets quickly put their First Aid skills to use to assess the casualty, and contact an ambulance for the casualty to be taken to Dr Grays Hospital, which saw the casualty make a full recovery.

Cdt Laws also received a second certificate for using her First Aid on a family member. Back in October while she was getting ready for school she discovered her mother was having difficulties breathing. Cdt Laws took control of the situation by contacting the ambulance, while reassuring her mother, as well as keeping her siblings updated while she was in the hospital with her mother throughout.

Cdt Laws and Cdt McMillian were put forward for their awards by their Detachment Commander Sergeant Major Instructor Graeme Wells (30) who said; “Both cadets used their skills without hesitation and certainly saved lives by doing so. I am extremely proud of both Zara and Robert and thought their actions were worth noting and glad to see that their actions have been recognised.”

Both Robert and Zara were presented with their certificates by the Battalion’s Commandant Colonel Mike MacDonald, at the Battalion’s Cadet Training Centre in Dingwall, during the Moray Company Annual Awards Dinner in December last year.
