Cumbria ACF to visit the turks and caicos islands

11 April 2022

  • Cumbria ACF

You may remember that owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to cancel our scheduled trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands in 2020. The good news is that we are going to make a second attempt at sending 12 Cadets plus 4 Adults to the Caribbean during October half-term in 2022. For the 16 cadets who didn’t make it in 2020, if you are now an SI or a CFAV in the making, you will be considered for the Ex, should you wish to volunteer.

The dates for the trip are to Depart Gatwick Airport on Sunday 23rd October, returning to Gatwick Airport on Friday 4th November. The Party will meet at Carlisle Castle on the 22nd October at 4pm and will travel to Gatwick via coach during the night.

This is October half term plus, a second week, and the Commandant is happy to write to any school who requires a letter of absence as you represent the United Kingdom in the TCI.

Please apply to you DC and OC should you wish to be considered. Please not that all bids should be submitted no later than Friday 29th April 2022.

Cadets must be over the age of 16 (and under 18) on 22nd October 2022 and the intention is to take 6 Female Cadets, and 6 Male Cadets plus 2 Female CFAVs and 2 Male CFAVs.

All participants must pass a rigorous swim test to be conducted after the selection date and be able to present a Passport with at least 6 months outstanding from 4 Nov 22 i.e., an expiry date after the 4 May 2023. It is a requirement of the TCI that all visitors must be fully vaccinated and be able to show their vaccination status.

The cost of the trip will be £450 per person. County HQ will consider support for funding on a case-by-case basis. County HQ will make a significant contribution to the exercise plus other grants and funds will be considered.

Cadets can expect to carry out a joint programme with the Cadets of the TCI, and will conduct water sports, sailing, paddle boarding, diving on the third largest reef in the world as well as conducting environmental and maritime projects to protect the islands and their wildlife. It should be a trip of a lifetime.

What to do next? If you are a strong swimmer and aged between 16 and 18 on 22nd October 2022, you should carry out some research into the Turks and Caicos Islands, finding out where they are and what makes them special. You will be asked about this as part of the selection process, which will be held after all applications are received.
