The Ten Tors Challenge<\/a>, held annually on Dartmoor, is an iconic event firmly embedded in the collective consciousness of South West England, hosted by the British Army. It is not only a test of physical endurance but also a life-changing experience for the young participants. This year, 41 Army Cadet teams (made up from 32 Combined Cadet Force teams and 9 from the Army Cadet Force) navigated a combination of routes ranging from 35, 45 and 55-mile options depending on the age of the teams. <\/p>\n

Cadets’ Arrival and Preparation<\/h2>\n

The excitement began on Friday when cadets arrived at Okehampton Camp – North Devon. Greeted by a vibrant military engagement village and live music from military bands, the atmosphere was electric. Early preparation is crucial, with training often starting months in advance to ensure that participants are ready to tackle the demanding terrain of Dartmoor.<\/p>\n

The Challenge Begins<\/h2>\n

At 5 a.m. on Saturday, cadets were awoken by “Chariots of Fire” played over the loudspeakers. After breakfast, they headed to the start line, where the Red Devil Parachute Display Team performed. Ray Mears, the event’s VIP, addressed the participants, counting them down to the 7 a.m. start. At the sound of gunfire, the challenge began, with helicopters flying low overhead, marking the start of an unforgettable journey.<\/p>\n

The Ten Tors Challenge<\/h2>\n

The Ten Tors Challenge is designed for teenagers, with 2,406 participants in 401 teams this year. Teams of six navigate routes across the rugged northern half of Dartmoor. They must visit ten nominated tors\/checkpoints within two days, carrying all their supplies and camping overnight. This self-sufficiency aspect is a core part of the challenge, testing endurance and resilience.<\/p>\n

Dartmoor: The Perfect Setting<\/h2>\n

Dartmoor<\/a>, a vast national park covering 368 square miles, provides the perfect backdrop for the Ten Tors Challenge. Known for its dramatic granite outcrops, or tors, and swift-rising streams and rivers, the terrain is beautiful and demanding. The area’s unpredictable weather adds another layer of difficulty, ensuring that completing the challenge is no small feat. <\/p>\n

Support and Organisation<\/h2>\n

The Army’s Headquarters South West organised the event with support from the Royal Navy<\/a>, Royal Air Force<\/a>, civilian emergency services, and volunteers. Over 1,000 enablers were present to ensure the smooth running of the challenge. This collaborative effort highlights the significance of the event and the dedication of those involved.<\/p>\n

Participating in the TT35 and TT45 were Wycliffe College CCF<\/a>, St Bartholomew’s School CCF<\/a>, Godolphin CCF<\/a>, Hele’s School CCF<\/a>, Blundells School CCF<\/a>, Sherborne School CCF<\/a>, Gordon’s School CCF<\/a>, Torquay Academy CCF<\/a>, Penair School CCF<\/a>, King’s Bruton CCF<\/a>, Redruth School CCF (A),<\/a> Devon ACF<\/a>, Cornwall ACF<\/a>, Wiltshire ACF<\/a>, and Somerset ACF<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Participating in all three categories TT35, TT45, and TT55 was King’s College Taunton CCF<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A Life-Changing Experience<\/h2>\n

The Ten Tors Challenge is more than just a physical test; it is a formative experience that leaves a lasting impact on all who participate. As the event’s founder once said, “If there is anything more important than the will to succeed, it is that the will shall not falter.” For many young people, the skills, resilience, and memories gained from Ten Tors will stay with them for life.<\/p>\n
