New Commandant joins Kent ACF at annual camp

22.08.11

Colonel J D Wilson TD, has taken over as Commandant of the Kent Army Cadet Force (KACF) from Colonel R W Murfin TD DL. On 22nd August he visited KACF at this year’s annual.

Over 430 members of KACF attended camp at RAF St Mawgan in Cornwall for two weeks, where they experienced a wide range of exciting activities including abseiling, rock climbing, mountain biking, competition shooting, kayaking, military skills and navigation training.

Colonel Wilson, Commandant KACF said: “Firstly, I would like to thank Colonel Murfin for all the hard work, enthusiasm and dedication he has put in over the last eight years and wish him success for his future ventures. I am pleased and excited about my new appointment and look forward to working with KACF to continue offering cadets and adult volunteers a full range of challenging and rewarding experiences.  I am grateful to the cadets, adult volunteers and officers for completing a safe and successful camp and would encourage anyone who is interested in joining to contact us for more information”.

KACF also welcomed many visitors during camp including:  the former High Sheriff of Kent, Amanda Cottrell OBE, DL; Councillor Leyland Ridings, OBE; Colonel Peter Gilbert, DL, Deputy Commander and TA Colonel 2 (South East) Brigade; Squadron Leader Glynn Shaw, S03 Cadets, (2 SE Brigade) and the High Sheriff of Kent Mrs Georgie Warner.

Mrs Warner thoroughly enjoyed her first visit to a KACF annual camp and said: “KACF have hosted a fantastic camp, young people from all over the county have had a fabulous opportunity to get involved in many challenging, but enjoyable activities.  Kent Army Cadet Force really does gives young people a really good start in life in terms of self-discipline, teamwork and the ability to make decisions which will help in later life. I would encourage any parent/guardian in Kent to find out more about what the cadets can offer young people of the county”.

The Corps of Drums (from Sheerness) were also able to showcase their musical skills during the camp.
