DEAL DETACHMENT AWARDS EVENING

20.12.11

Deal Detachment of the Kent Army Cadet Force (KACF) recently celebrated the hard work of the cadets and adult instructors over the last year with an awards evening. Guests included representatives from Kent County Council and the Royal British Legion, who joined in with celebrations with the cadets and their instructors.

Details of award winners are below:
• Best recruit: Recruit Harry Scott, 13
• Most improved cadet: Cadet Tara Samson, 14
• Best Junior NCO: Cadet Corporal Tom Knights, 15
• Best Senior NCO: Cadet Sergeant Jonathan Buckle, 15
• Drill and turnout: Cadet Sergeant Jonathan Buckle, 15
• The Jack Manning Trophy (The Cadet's Cadet): Cadet Staff Sergeant Kieran Marshall, 16.

The Jack Manning Trophy is given in memory of the former army cadet who was tragically killed in an accident in October last year.

Colonel JD Wilson, DL, Commandant KACF attended the awards and said:

"It has been a genuine pleasure to present awards to members of the Deal detachment. The awards recognise the commitment made by cadets from the Deal area, covering a wide range of disciplines including first aid and military training. It is testament to the hard work of the Detachment Commander, Staff Sergeant Lara Henwood and her team of adult instructors that so many cadets have achieved recognition tonight. It is also particularly heartening to see the benefits of the very close relationship that the detachment has with Kent County Council and the Royal British Legion, both of whom were represented at this awards evening”.

Mary Eldridge; Poppy Appeal Organiser for the Walmer and Deal Area said:
"The youth of today get a lot of bad press, we should all be proud of these young boys and girls and their achievements, it has been a pleasure to work with them this year".
She presented two surprise trophies on the evening; the Poppy Appeal Cup: awarded to the organisation (Deal Detachment KACF) that collected the most overall in 2011 and the Individual Cup: (awarded to the pot that collected the most in 2011), this was awarded to Cadet Lance corporal Daniel Buckle (13) and Cadet Harley Russell (12).

KACF are always looking for both male and female adult instructors to join, who are willing to give the commitment of one or two evenings a week, four or more weekends a year and two weeks for annual camp.
