Packing bags for Ghana

Leigh on Sea Cadets willingly gave up their weekend to pack bags for Asda customers, to help them pack their own bags for a trip to Ghana.

The last weekend of November saw cadets from C Company meet at the supermarket in Shoebury intent on helping people, whilst raising money with a smile. The determined cadets worked relentlessly to show everyone they met what helpful individuals Army Cadets are.

On the first day nine cadets raised an impressive £525 followed by 10 cadets on the second day that raised an astounding £857. The two days provided a hefty total of £1382 towards their trip next year.

Cadets that are going on the trip were not the only ones raising money for the fund. Leigh on Sea Detachment Commander Lieutenant Miranda Scott said: “The cadets worked very hard and carried a smile all day whilst assisting the shoppers for donations. The selfless commitment from the cadet’s helped to raise a staggering contribution to the Ghana fund. Thank you to everyone involved.”

To have a wonderful experience each cadet has to raise £1600 which pays for the flights and activities during the three week trip next August.

The aim of the excursion to Ghana is to fulfil their volunteering service and residential sections of their Duke of Edinburgh Awards. This is also not forgetting what a life changing experience it will be for the cadets.

Whilst there the cadets will go to a town called Ho and help out at a children’s kindergarten and orphanage. They will work and play with the children engaging them interactively with sports like football. The cadets will also assist core educational skills such as reading and writing.

Their other main challenge will be to help in renovating a local school.

To date the cadets have raised an enormous £14000 through raffles, quizzes, car washes, charity balls, boot sales and a balloon race.
